In the scope of “Addressing of Invasive Alien Species Threats in Terrestrial Areas and Inland Waters in Turkey Project” funded under the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA II) between Republic of Turkey and European Union, and implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, the second of the trainings planned to be held in the pilot areas regarding the six target species determined, Invasive Alien Species Control and Management with Special Focus on Bur Cucumber (Sicyos angulatus) was held between 23 – 24 August 2021 in Trabzon.
Approximately 70 participants from different regional directorates of the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks within the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, other relevant Directorates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (General Directorate of Forestry and regional directorates, General Directorate of Water Management, General Directorate of Tea Enterprises, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies), Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, NGOs, universities, ÇAYKUR and project experts participated to the training.
Prof. Dr. Ali Serhan Tarkan, Deputy Team Leader and Head of Department of Basic Sciences, Faculty of Fisheries, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Prof. Dr. Salih Terzioğlu and Prof. Dr. Kamil Coşkunçelebi from Karadeniz Technical University, TERIAS Project Bur Cucumber (Sicyos angulatus) Species Experts acted as trainers.
The trainers provided knowledge on invasive alien species in general, their prevention, monitoring, control, and management and information in particularly on control and management of Bur Cucumber (Sicyos angulatus). Group discussion, case studies were carried out and field visits were conducted to Solaklı, an example of a dense population of Bur Cucumber (Sicyos angulatus), and Uzungöl Nature Park, an example of an invasion of Bur Cucumber (Sicyos angulatus) in a protected area, where the trainers presented different problematic scenarios and came up with solutions
