In the scope of “Addressing of Invasive Alien Species Threats in Terrestrial Areas and Inland Waters in Turkey Project” funded under the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA II) between Republic of Turkey and European Union, and implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, the public awareness activities under Activity 4.2 planned to be held in the pilot areas regarding the six target species determined, the first of them as “Public Awareness Activity with Special Focus on Red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans)” was held on 12 May 2022 in Antalya.
Red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) Species Specific Public Awareness Activity program carried out under the leadership of the project experts, with the contributions of the project team members representing the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks and the technical assistance team, to inform and aware target student groups about the species.
The activity which took place with the participation of approximately 110 people as target middle school student groups was included in the program held within the framework of the “I Have an Appointment with the National Park” event organized by the 6th Regional Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks Antalya Provincial Branch Directorate in Güllük Mountain (Termessos) National Park in order to raise awareness about Red-eared slider species.
Within the scope of the event, the introduction of the Red-eared slider species, its general distribution and its effects on the ecosystem were discussed at a level that children could understand.
